"Just be yourself. You all have real stories, and we want to hear them."

Last week, advocates from across the state joined us for our "Meet Your Legislators Day" at the state capitol, which included Legislative 101 training from our friends at Protecting Arizona's Family Coalition, as well as federal and state policy updates from AZHC's own Joan Serviss. We also sat in on committee meetings, checked out the floors of the House and Senate, participated in a handful of one-on-one meetings, and everyone registered for the Request to Speak system, one of the easiest, most important ways to make your voice heard throughout the legislative session.

We were pleased to be joined for breakfast by Representative Michelle Udall (LD-25, Mesa), who briefly spoke with our attendees about how best to reach out to our elected officials. "Just be yourself," she advised. "We can tell when you're reading from a script or only sharing bulleted talking points. But you all have real stories, and we want to hear them."

Also joining us to meet and speak to our advocates was Representative Lela Alston (LD-24, central Phoenix), who has been a long-time affordable housing advocate and friend of the Coalition. Representative Alston spoke about the continued work to restore the state housing trust fund, and her commitment to building stronger, healthier communities.

Interested in taking action on state-level legislation right now, right from where you are? We ask that you reach out to your state representatives in SUPPORT of HB2568: Affordable Housing Tax Credit, and even more investment in affordable housing in Arizona, no later than Tuesday, March 13th. While this bill failed in the House on third read, the motion to reconsider passed, and must be reconsidered before COB on March 14th.

If passed, this bill would help to expand affordable housing in Arizona by establishing a credit against individual and corporate taxes and insurance premium taxes for projects that qualify for the federal low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC).

FEDERAL UPDATE:
Never too early for appropriations advocacy

On February 9th, after a brief 5.5 hour government shutdown, President Trump signed into law a sweeping $320 billion budget agreement and a continuing resolution (CR) through Friday, March 23rd, allowing more time to finalize the FY2018 budget. We have reason to believe this FY2018 budget will pass, but as advocates we must keep looking forward to the FY2019 budget.

Join AZHC and housing advocates nationwide in helping to ensure affordable housing and community development programs receive the highest allocation possible.

INDIVIDUAL ADVOCATES
Please contact your members of Congress and ask them to submit appropriations requests to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. These committees use this information to decide how to divvy up available funding among various programs. The deadline for congressional members to submit FY19 appropriation requests related to the House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) is Monday, March 19th. (No date set for Senate Appropriations.)

>>> Click HERE to view the appropriations information typically needed by your members of Congress to submit formal appropriations requests.

ORGANIZATIONAL ADVOCATES
Our friends at the National Low-Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) have also put together a sign-on letter for agencies and organizations to call for funding caps to be lifted and programs to be fully funded. The deadline for organizations to sign on is next Friday, March 16th.

>>> Click HERE to view NLIHC's sign-on letter in full, and below to complete the sign-on.
