Young people on their own are some of the least visible and most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness. Family conflict is the primary reason for youth homelessness.  Many leave home after years of physical and sexual abuse, strained relationships, addiction of a family member, and/or parental neglect. Leaving home is, in many cases, a means of survival.

In Arizona, there are no shelters targeted to the young adult population, so many youth choose multiple temporary stays with friends or reside in places not intended for human habitation.  In the urban areas, drop in centers are utilized to help with workforce development and educational opportunities.
